Sustainable flax composites enter serial automotive production in new Volvo EX30

Swiss sustainable lightweighting company Bcomp has announced the application of its natural fibre composite technology, ampliTex™, in the new Volvo EX30. This landmark project will see Bcomp’s flax fibre composites offered as an optional trim for the dashboard, and doors of the EX30. The collaboration follows Volvo Cars Tech Fund’s Series B investment in Bcomp last year.

While Bcomp’s natural fibre composites have been well-proven in demanding motorsport applications like Formula 1, Formula E, and SuperFormula, this is the first production vehicle to reach consumers. The highly innovative Volvo EX30 is an all-electric small SUV that combines safety, sustainability, cutting-edge tech, and Scandinavian design. Drivers can choose from four distinct interior ‘rooms’, two of which embrace the natural aesthetic of ampliTex™ trim panels: the Mist and Pine rooms.

Bcomp had worked with Volvo Cars previously, in 2018, for the Volvo Ocean Race Recycled Plastics Demonstrator Vehicle. This was followed by the Concept Recharge in 2021, which demonstrated the future direction that Volvo Cars would take in all-electric car development. It included extensive use of Bcomp composites in both the interior and exterior, from storage areas to bumpers and sills.

ampliTex™ is a technical reinforcement fabric made from renewable flax fibres grown in Europe. It combines sustainability, low weight and unique design opportunities. The use of ampliTex™ in the EX30 marks a significant stride in Bcomp’s vision for mobility, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability and long-term efforts to reduce the lifetime emissions of passenger vehicles. It is also in support of Volvo Cars’ sustainability strategy, which includes the aims to sell solely all-electric cars by 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

The Volvo EX30, featuring Bcomp’s ampliTex™ technology, was officially launched on June 7th 2023 and is available for order or pre-order in selected markets.

Christian Fischer, CEO and Co-Founder at Bcomp, commented: “This is a milestone moment for Bcomp. We are all incredibly proud to see ampliTex™ composites in the new Volvo EX30 – it will be the first production vehicle delivered to customers with our materials! We have had the pleasure to work closely with Volvo Cars for a long time, sharing the same vision for sustainable mobility and the potential for biobased materials to contribute to a circular future. This is the first step of our plan to scale into the large-scale mobility industry and continue our mission to help our customers decarbonize their supply chains.”

Today's KNOWLEDGE Share:JERA COMMITMENT TO AMMONIA COAL FIRING THERMAL POWER PLANT

Today's KNOWLEDGE Share:

JERA(Japan) went one step forward to a 40% Hydrogen-LNG co-firing thermal power plant at Linden Gas Thermal Power Station Unit 6 in New Jersey, the USA.
JERA will launch a 20% Ammonia-Coal cofiring thermal power plant test operation in 2023, which is one year ahead of schedule.

Japan has been developing Hydrogen cofiring thermal power plants and Ammonia cofiring power plants simultaneously because about 72.9% of energy resource is fossil fuel thermal power plants as of FY2021. If Japan can realize lower emission thermal power plants, the system will contribute to the Carbon-Neutral 2050.
Owing to the narrow land space, the renewable energy rate can not expand easily in Japan. So, a combination of Hydrogen, Ammonia, Renewable energy, and Nuclear power is a realistic approach.

INEOS Nitriles Launches Its Bio-based Product Line for Acrylonitrile

INEOS Nitriles launches its first bio-attributed product line for Acrylonitrile. The new product is to be sold under the Invireo™ brand. Invireo™ represents innovation in the global acrylonitrile market and offers a more climate-friendly and sustainable alternative to existing acrylonitrile.

Manufactured at INEOS Nitriles’ site in Cologne Germany, Invireo™ is made using bio-attributed propylene, which enables the replacement of fossil fuel resources.

Reducing 90% of End Product’s Carbon Footprints:

INEOS Nitriles’ certification by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) and Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) allows the use of bio, bio-circular and circular feedstock into the supply chain according to a mass balance approach.

Mass balance is an essential tool used to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel materials as feedstock across a wide range of industries. In practice, it allows the mixing of renewable and recycled materials with traditional feedstock to create a lower-carbon product. It is recognized as a necessary step in arriving at a fully circular economy.

Invireo™ Products are certified by ISCC Plus and RSB as delivering a 100% substitution of fossil-based propylene feedstock in its production system, enabling a lower carbon footprint compared to conventionally produced products.

Acrylonitrile is essential to, and successfully used in, a variety of industrial applications such as wind turbines, automotive, aerospace, textile, chemicals for special applications and sporting goods. These applications are essential to our everyday life, and it is important that we continue to serve society’s needs, whilst continually reducing carbon emissions.

Hans Casier, CEO at INEOS Nitriles said, “Put simply, Invireo™ is a green feedstock that reduces the carbon footprint of the end product by more than 90%. Through our sustainability program we have developed this new, bio-based product line. Invireo™ supports our customers with drop-in products that meet their rigorous quality and performance requirements. At the same time, they move the industry closer towards a lower-carbon economy for acrylonitrile without compromising the unique product qualities.”

Alice Dibben, Sustainability Manager for INEOS Nitriles said, “Invireo™ is a clear example of our ongoing commitment to accelerate progress towards a lower carbon future. It is a major step forward in INEOS’ journey to sustainability and demonstrates our dedication to developing innovative solutions that address our customers and society’s needs.”

Global Propylene Demand - 2015 to 2030

 • Propylene is among the largest produced petrochemicals in the world and has recently seen steady growth in demand

• It is expected to grow at an average of 3.4 % p.a. over the period 2022-2030
• Asia continues to dominate propylene consumption primarily due to the growth of the automotive and packaging sectors in developing countries such as China, South Korea, India and Japan

• In North America, the US holds the largest market share, with increasing demand from end-use industries such as automotive, construction and packaging sectors, as well as rapid production of shale gas

• The development of alternatives to propylene and the increasing usage of recycled materials in certain application sectors may hamper the propylene demand in market

Today's KNOWLEDGE Share:Phase out Fossil Fule Heating

Today's KNOWLEDGE Share:
NEW RESEARCH: More and more EU countries phase out fossil fuel heating. This is the first peer-reviewed systematic analysis of phase-out regulations for fossil fuel boilers in the EU.

Our new paper co-authored by Sibylle Braungardt, Benedikt Tezak and Veit Bürger from Oeko-Institut e.V. and me from the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) is available here for free access: https://lnkd.in/eSTDSbrZ

Fossil fuel boilers used for individual heating currently provide almost 60% of the energy consumed for space & water heating in the EU. Share differs between countries, ranging from >80% in Ireland, Luxemburg, Netherlands & Belgium to <10% in Sweden, Finland, Estonia & Malta.

We identified nine countries in the EU that have implemented or announced phase-out regulations for fossil fuel heating systems. Those countries include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands and Slovenia.

The politics of introducing such bans is challenging as we have seen in Germany recently. It is now likely that the proposals will be modified to a significant extent. Expect further changes to the plans in other countries too.

10% of the EU's energy consumption for space heating is covered by the existing regulations. When additionally accounting for the planned phase-out regulations, this share increases to 28%.

Going forward the effectiveness of these schemes will need to be carefully monitored. In order to meet the climate targets for the buildings sector and the climate targets overall rapid progress with replacing carbon intensive fossil fuel heating is needed.
