SABIC Introduces High-performance Injection Molding PBT for Medical Applications

SABIC announced the availability of VALOX™ HX325HP resin. It is a new high-performance, medical-grade, injection molding polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin.


This resin is developed especially for high-precision parts, such as components of insulin delivery pens, insulin pumps, auto-injectors and continuous glucose monitors. It combines outstanding processability with high chemical resistance and validated biocompatibility. SABIC featured VALOX™ HX325HP resin at NPE2024.


Complies to International Biocompatibility Standards:

The new medical-grade PBT resin has passed stringent injection molding trials. It demonstrated high flow even in complex designs. It has excellent mold release properties with lower shrinkage variation compared with competitive engineering plastics.


In service, VALOX™ HX325HP resin delivers high resistance to a wide range of chemicals for the mitigation of environmental stress cracking (ESC). It offers compatibility with ethylene oxide (EtO), gamma irradiation and steam sterilization.


The new material has been successfully tested to international biocompatibility standards. Preliminary assessments according to ISO 10993 or USP Class VI are available upon request. In addition, the grade is subject to SABIC’s Healthcare Policy. It provides reliable formulation lock and change control management in line with FDA and EU guidelines for medical-grade plastics.


Formaldehyde-free Alternative to POM Materials

VALOX™ HX325HP resin also serves as a formaldehyde-free alternative to polyoxymethylene (POM) materials.The resin is supplied as an unreinforced, neat material, as well as in a limited range of standard colors.

Today's KNOWLEDGE Share If a relatively high Mw grade flows from thin to thick, as shown in the picture, and if the time needed to fill the thick section is way shorter than the average polymer relaxation time, the polymer will not be able to reach its higher viscosity (corresponding to higher thickness/lower shear-rate). I am assuming here the polymer reached equilibrium low viscosity in the thin section, say for instance because it is much longer. Any pressure prediction not accounting for transient rheology would then overpredict the pressure to fill.Of course the diverging flow will further complicate the situation and mess with the molecular orientation created in the thin section, but to what extent ? Since this is more of a reasonable "conjecture", don't take this for granted, and discuss or share your opinion in the comments. There are hundreds of Rheology papers on the "4:1 contraction flow". Bibby Marine Orders First Battery and Methanol Powered eCSOV

  A shipbuilding contract has been completed for what is being called the “world’s first truly zero-emission, electric Commission Service Operation Vessel,” which is being built as part of UK sponsored demonstration project. The ship is expected to enter service in the UK in 2026 using a combination of a powerful battery system along with dual-fuel methanol engines. A coalition of leading maritime companies led by Bibby Marine proposed the project as part of the UK’s Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) project staged by the UK Department of Transportation. A total of £80 million was awarded to 10 projects in the 2022 round with the Bibby effort being   awarded   $25 million. They estimated the cost of the project for the vessel at $37.5 million total.
