Innovative Robotic sheet molding process

Innovative method for rapidly producing hard tooling (and other metal parts) is being commercialized by Machina Labs Inc. (Los Angeles, Calif., U.S.). Described as dieless robotic sheet forming... Machina’s contributions are in the application of computational modeling and simulations, machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI), sensor technologies and kinematic solutions (industrial robot arms). The entire process runs off a software stack and interfaces developed by Machina. It transforms CAD files into robot tool paths and uses sensors to interpret force and torque being applied as well as optical scans measuring deformation to incrementally manipulate sheet metal to form parts. The process creates a digital twin as the part takes shape, and a digital thread captures all relevant process characterization and part qualification information..."

Decarbonization action taken by Germany

 #hydrogen #fuelcell #trucks come with a sgnificant #decarbonization potential, once #blue #hydrogen and #green #hydrogen are available

With #green_hydrogen entering the market in Germany in 2023/24 #hydrogen #trucks can help decarbonizing #transportation timely. The impact will be larger once #blue and #green #hydrogen will be imported.

#battery trucks (#bev) for long-haul application need huge batteries, but still could contribute to decarbonization, once the grid mix in Germany gets cleaner. For the last two years though, carbon intensity of the German grid has increased and it may continue to do so in 2023 and 2024.

Liquid hydrogen (#LH2) and cryo-compressed hydrogen (#CcH2 #CRYOGAS) will play a significant role in decarbonzing transport, once #green and #blue #hydrogen are available.

The first environmentally-friendly cabin interior concept made with natural fibers!

The first environmentally-friendly cabin interior concept made with natural fibers!

Meet AEROFLAX!

Aircraft operators are constantly looking for ways to make flying more sustainable. With AeroFLAX Lufthansa Technik has developed the first airworthy composite solution based on renewable, eco-efficient, and airworthy pre-impregnated fiber meeting the flammability requirements for aircraft cabins!

With its unique combination of ampliTex™ and powerRibs™ flax fiber reinforcements and a bio-based resin system, a cabin component's weight can be reduced by up to 20 percent, and additional CO2 savings can be leveraged over its entire lifecycle.

As new eco-efficient aircraft types will only come into market in a decade and as every part that is made of glass fiber or carbon fiber can also be made of flax fiber, the entire interior cabin lining can soon be made of AeroFLAX during line-fit on-site at the aircraft manufacturer or during retrofit.

With AeroFLAX, Lufthansa Technik is paving the way to a more environmentally-friendly aircraft interior. By offering eco-efficient materials for cabin interior, additional weight and CO2 savings can be achieved and sustainability becomes perceivable on board.

Kevlar broken samples from dynamic stabbing zoomed-in!

Kevlar broken samples from dynamic stabbing zoomed-in!

Research project "Dynamic/quasi-static stab-resistance andmechanical properties of soft body armourcomposites constructed from Kevlar fabrics andshear thickening fluids" published by Jianbin Qin, Guangcheng Zhang, Lisheng Zhou, Jiantong Li and Xuetao Shi, investigated how different quantities of shear thickening fluid (STF) affect the knife-stabbing resistance and the quasi-static mechanical properties of kevlar composite samples.

This collage shows photographs and SEM images of broken samples from the dynamic stabbing tests. (a), (d), (g) and (j) are theneat Kevlar fabric; (b), (e), (h) and (k) are the composite with 36.23 wt% STF; (c), (f), (i) and (l) are the composite with 103.79 wt% STF.

The results show that the shear thickneing fluid positively influenced the properties of the samples!

ELIX Polymers and Partners to Produce 3D Printed Prosthetics Using rABS

ELIX Polymers has collaborated with Repsol and Leitat on a sociotechnological project with Ayúdame3D, a Spanish social startup that promotes the social value of technology through awareness-raising programs to help people with disabilities thanks to 3D printing.

Sustainable Orthopedic Solution

Ayúdame3D creates and delivers 3D printed prosthetics called Trésdesis, free of charge to people throughout the world. It obtains financing through programs with education centers and through CSR actions with companies: sponsorships, corporate volunteering and the creation of solidarity trophies and merchandising, as well as social impact conferences.

ELIX Polymers is a company that has great experience in the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) industry. And within the framework of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and in order to contribute positively to the social well-being of people and reduce social inequalities, ELIX has collaborated with the association on a solidarity project that uses recycled ABS as the raw material for 3D printing.

The challenge of ELIX Polymers has been to offer a customized solution for the project, for which it has applied the circular economy model through two strategic programs of the company’s portfolio of sustainable solutions: ‘Circular Plastics’ and ‘Responsible Innovation’. In the manufacturing process, ELIX has upcycled by turning waste into a high-value product through cooperation in the entire value chain, in which it has incorporated virtualization and new 3D technologies.

Trésdesis: 3D Printed Arms for Wrist, Elbow or Shoulder

The project has been possible thanks to the collaboration with two large companies: Repsol that donated 4,000 pieces of ABS boards to the association, coming from computer equipment that would have otherwise been discarded; and Leitat, which is a technology center of excellence. Leitat has created spools using the raw material recovered by ELIX for the subsequent 3D printing and manufacturing of Trésdesis, which are 3D printed arms for the wrist, elbow or shoulder.

Toni Prunera, head of Business Development and R&D /IP at ELIX, comments: "This project has given us the opportunity to show and prove the benefits of plastic, specifically through a more efficient ABS recovery circle that has resulted in an orthopedic application that will allow helping people who are the most vulnerable.’ Toni adds that ‘ABS is a great ally in medical applications that help to improve the health of people and society"

As a leading global company in ABS manufacturing, for several years ELIX Polymers has promoted the recovery of plastic waste as a raw material, and specifically in the development of this project, the circularity of ABS has been key. The project has also been a success thanks to the leadership of Ayúdame3D and its commitment, work and efforts to place technology at the service of people. Under the motto, ‘Helping is too easy not to’, and with the help of donations and collaborative efforts, the social entity is taking innovation and technology to countries where they are needed the most.
