Extrusion lamination is a process in which a molten thermoplastic resin is extruded through a flat die and used as an adhesive layer to bond two or more substrates together. Instead of using solvent-based or water-based adhesives, the molten polymer itself acts as the bonding medium. The extruded resin is applied between substrates and immediately pressed together through a chill roll and pressure nip, forming a strong laminated structure. In practice, this means laminating barrier films , Aluminum Foil, Met-BOPP, Met-BOPET to printed bi-oriented films like BOPP, BOPET, and BOPA, then sealing with PE/PP webs. KCC Silicone has initiated a regular technical exchange program with the Robotics Institute at Seoul National University (SNU RI) to advance the development of silicone materials for robotics applications. On July 14, KCC Silicone hosted the inaugural Robotics Technology Exchange Seminar at its R&D Center in Giheung-gu, Yongin, South Korea. It’s material separating from the main melt stream and refusing to release cleanly at the die exit. When polymer starts building up, smearing, or burning around the die lips, it means one thing, the melt and the metal are no longer in agreement and you can’t just wipe it. If you try, you’ll do exactly what I did which is tear the sheath, mark the surface, or turn a nuisance into scrap. That’s because die drool isn’t loose material sitting there politely. It’s partially degraded polymer anchored to the die lip, fed continuously by whatever imbalance exists upstream. Most of the time, the cause is one or more of these; • localized shear overheating near the die exit • die temperature slightly mismatched to melt viscosity • poor melt homogeneity from screen pack or backpressure • additive or plasticize...
