Die drool isn’t random leakage.
It’s material separating from the main melt stream and refusing to release cleanly at the die exit.
When polymer starts building up, smearing, or burning around the die lips, it means one thing, the melt and the metal are no longer in agreement and you can’t just wipe it. If you try, you’ll do exactly what I did which is tear the sheath, mark the surface, or turn a nuisance into scrap.
That’s because die drool isn’t loose material sitting there politely. It’s partially degraded polymer anchored to the die lip, fed continuously by whatever imbalance exists upstream. Most of the time, the cause is one or more of these;
• localized shear overheating near the die exit
• die temperature slightly mismatched to melt viscosity
• poor melt homogeneity from screen pack or backpressure
• additive or plasticizer migration, especially with new compounds
• subtle die wear or surface condition changes
The drool keeps growing because the cause keeps feeding it.
Yes, using a torch on the die works.
It spikes the die-lip temperature instantly, lowers local viscosity, and burns off or remelts the degraded fraction that’s sticking. The drool disappears. But nothing upstream changed. If flame becomes part of the standard operating procedure, the process is already broken.
Real fixes live elsewhere:
• balance shear and residence time
• tune die temperature properly (±5–10 °C matters)
• revisit screen pack and backpressure
• inspect die lips and flow paths for wear or buildup
• question the material, not just the tooling
The die is just where the polymer stops being polite. If it’s drooling, it’s telling you something upstream is wrong. Use flame like a fire extinguisher if you keep reaching for it, the process is already on fire.
