TOPOLO-TRUCK is demonstrating an interesting approach using fiberglass-reinforced thermoplastic honeycomb panels for caravan body shells.
The manufacturer claims panel weights of just 1/3 to 1/2 of certain conventional alternatives.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲: Fiberglass skins carry bending loads, while a lightweight polypropylene honeycomb core keeps them separated to increase structural efficiency.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Thermoplastic lamination and welded panel connections create opportunities for lightweight, integrated body structures.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻: It's not simply about replacing heavier materials. It's about placing material where it contributes most to stiffness and strength.
The real potential lies in optimizing the complete body shell, including panel thickness, load paths, joints and local reinforcements.
