These five laws have been around for decades, and they still explain most of what goes wrong at work:
→ Deadlines slip because time expands to fill the space (Parkinson).
→ Plans fail because we’re always too optimistic (Hofstadter).
→ Teams game KPIs instead of improving the work (Goodhart).
→ Great performers get promoted into roles they hate (Peter).
→ Colleagues seem out to get you when they’re really just busy (Hanlon).
You can’t escape these laws.
But once you see them, you can plan around them.
Set tighter deadlines.
Pad your estimates.
Measure what matters, not what’s easy.
Promote for the next role, not the last one.
And assume good intent until proven otherwise.
Which one do you see most often at work?
