Vienna-based polyolefins producer Borouge International says it will make investments to expand its European mechanical plastic recycling capacity at sites in Niedergebra, Germany, and Wildon, Austria.

Borouge says the expansion strengthens its ability to meet growing customer demand for mechanically recycled polyolefins produced in Europe. “It also supports customers in securing more reliable access to circular materials driven by brand preference, evolving regulatory requirements such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR), and supply resilience needs,” states the firm.

At the Borouge site in Niedergebra, formerly known as MTM plastics, annual output of recycled mixed polyolefin (rPO) materials will increase by close to 9,000 metric tons.

The German facility converts postconsumer mixed polyolefin scrap into recycled materials for a what Borouge calls a broad range of rigid applications. The additional capacity is expected to become operational in the first quarter of next year, says the company.

At the Borouge site in Wildon, formerly known as Ecoplast, annual recycled polyethylene (rPE) output will increase by up to 5,000 metric tons. This additional capacity is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of next year and will support growing demand for recycled materials, particularly for flexible packaging applications, according to Borouge.

Borouge says its Elin Pelin facility in #Bulgaria, which produces more than 20,000 metric tons of premium-quality grades of postconsumer #recycledpolypropylene (rPP) annually, completes Borouge International’s European mechanical recycling portfolio and complements capabilities across flexible PE, rigid PP and mixed polyolefin streams, says the company.

In North America, Borouge makes what it calls top-quality PE film grades at its Syndigo plant in Indiana. The company also operates in Asia, collaborating with “a wide portfolio of suppliers for recycled material.”

“Circular materials are a strategic resource for Europe and around the world, not only to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements, but also to strengthen industrial competitiveness, brand differentiation and supply resilience,” says Dirk Langhammer, senior vice president-circular solutions with #BorougeInternational.

“The investments in our European #recycling platform give an even larger range of customers more reliable access to circular polyolefin solutions, from premium Borcycle M grades to fit-for-purpose Recleo materials tailored to diverse applications,” adds Langhammer.
