𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐥?

Because they solve very different problems.

An electrospun nanofiber network can provide:

→ 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚

→ 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

→ 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

→ 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

But by itself, it does not behave like a soft, water-rich material.

A hydrogel gives almost the opposite properties:

→ 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭

→ 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

→ 𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭

→ 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞

But hydrogels can be mechanically weak and difficult to use when strength or structural stability matters.

So instead of choosing one:

Nanofiber network + hydrogel → hybrid material

The fibers can act as a reinforcing skeleton or functional pathway, while the hydrogel fills the surrounding space and provides hydration, softness and transport.

But

How much nanofiber reinforcement can we add before the hydrogel stops behaving like a soft, hydrated tissue?

What applications could benefit from combining a fibrous network with a hydrated matrix?
