Cambium, a developer and manufacturer of advanced materials for defense and high-performance applications, will launch its breakthrough #lasereyeprotection (LEP) for commercial and private pilots at the upcoming Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) 70th Air Safety Forum September 14–17, 2026 in Washington, D.C. Cambium selected pilot eyewear industry leader #FlyingEyes®, a professional-grade #eyewear brand founded and engineered by pilots.

The bespoke eyewear will feature Flying Eyes frames fitted with Cambium #LEP lenses. This introduces a new standard in laser protection, allowing pilots to comfortably and seamlessly protect their eyes from disorienting green laser dazzle, while still easily reading their instrument panel with excellent visual acuity and color contrast, even during night flights.

Laser strike incidents are a clear and present safety threat for pilots that can cause flash blindness and transient eyesight impairment after just one second of exposure. These so-called lazing incidents typically occur during landing and takeoff. The US Federal Aviation Administration (#FAA) logs thousands of laser strikes against commercial, private, and transport aircraft pilots each year. According to the FAA, Aiming a laser at an aircraft is a serious safety risk and violates federal law. Many high-powered lasers can completely incapacitate pilots who are trying to fly safely to their destinations and may be carrying hundreds of passengers." Weaponized laser strikes are also being used against military personnel & civilian personnel.

Cambium LEP provides commercial and private pilots next-level safety and peace of mind. This is the first commercial product to come out of Cambium's #SentinelOps® next-gen photonics technology platform. Launched in July 2026, SentinelOps is a dual-use, tunable LEP and directed-energy protection platform with a broad portfolio of products in development that include helmet-based systems, satellite & ground sensors, cockpit windshield and porthole windows, and heads-up displays (HUD). Cambium's LEP for military personnel, developed with US government and internal funding, is the next SentinelOps product in the queue.

Flying Eyes is the go-to brand for pilots everywhere. Launching with them gives us a proven commercial product & frame that pilots already seek out and trust, which enables this technology to reach the cockpit at the speed of relevance rather than the speed of procurement.
