Dear Plastic Critics,

I understand your concerns.

Naturally, microplastics present in our body organs and bloodstreams raise concerns. They are in my body too.


But before condemning plastics altogether, may I ask a few questions?

What did you eat today?

How was your drinking water delivered?


If you or your loved ones needed emergency surgery tonight, would you refuse plastic syringes, IV bags, surgical gloves, or sterile medical packaging?


The reality is not simple. Everything we use involves tradeoffs.

Modern civilization depends on plastics. Literally. They contribut to food production, preserve food, protect drinking water, reduce contamination & save countless lives every day. We often criticize plastics while depending our lives on them.

Recently, headlines about microplastics found in human body have generated understandable concern.


But there is a fundamental scientific question that must accompany.


๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐€๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐€๐ฅ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ?

Science should not evaluate one material in isolation. It should compare realistic alternatives.

For example, the data in the attached graph show polyester to be roughly 10 times stronger than cotton. Under the same functional requirement, that implies replacing polyester with cotton could generate approximately 10 times more fiber debris through wear.

Many assume cotton is harmless simply because it is natural.

It is not that simple either.


๐‚๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐จ๐š๐๐ฌ from pesticides, fertilizers, bleaching agents, dyes, finishing chemicals, other processing chemicals.


If cotton replaces polyester like many organizations and activists claim, the overall environmental burden could become substantially greater through both increased dust release & associated chemical loads.


This is not fearmongering. It is science.

Focusing only on 1 gram of microplastics while ignoring the potential consequences of 10 grams of far more chemically loaded natural fibers is not comprehensive science.


It is a singular perspective. It is like refusing to drink water because it contains trace contaminants while ignoring the far greater consequences of dehydration. No one does that.

Plastic tradeoffs require same level of intellectual balance and honesty.

I know I do not die today because of traces of microplastics in my body. At the same time, I know that I live healthier today than past generations in large part due to the benefits provided by plastics in food, water, medical science & more.


Real environmental sustainability is not achieved by emotional reactions based on fear. It requires evaluating the entire exposure pathway & all realistic alternatives.

Science should guide what we do. Emotional reactions to incomplete or one-sided information can make things worse.
