Green strength is the resistance to deformation of a rubber stock in the uncured state. It is a critical property for maintaining the shape of the green tire before curing.
Normally, natural rubber imparts good green strength to a rubber compound because NR tends to crystallize when stretched. One common reason for low green strength in NR compounds is excessive mastication during mixing, which breaks down the molecular weight and reduces chain entanglements.
Electron beam (EB) treatment is often used to enhance the green strength of NR/SBR blends in tire carcass compounds, and it has also been reported to improve the green strength of bromobutyl rubber. Additionally, using high–green-strength barrier layers helps minimize gauge distortion during tire building.
Storage and Handling of Green Tires
