When designing an injection mold, achieving the desired surface finish isn't just about selecting the right VDI texture, it's also about applying the correct draft angle.
These two parameters go hand in hand. 🤝
💡 A rougher VDI texture increases friction between the plastic part and the mold surface during ejection. Without sufficient draft, this can lead to:
❌ Drag marks
❌ Scratches on the textured surface
❌ Difficult ejection
❌ Increased wear on the mold
💯 As a general rule, the deeper the texture (higher VDI value), the greater the draft angle required to ensure a smooth release and preserve the intended finish.
At Star Moldes, we work closely with our customers from the design phase to optimize:
✅ Part aesthetics
✅ Mold manufacturability
✅ Reliable ejection
✅ Long-term production performance
Because great plastic parts are not the result of a single design decision, they come from understanding how every detail works together.
