In PVC dry blending, most discussions focus on formulation:
• PVC Resin
• Stabilizers
• Lubricants
• Processing Aids (PA)
• Impact Modifiers (IM)
However, one parameter is often overlooked:
The timing of additive addition during the mixing process.
This detail can significantly influence dry blend quality, fusion behavior, process stability, and final product performance.
🔹 Processing Aid (PA): How Does It Work?
Processing Aids are high molecular weight acrylic polymers designed to improve PVC processability.
During extrusion:
• PVC particles begin to soften.
• PA increases inter-particle interaction.
• Heat transfer improves.
• Fusion becomes more uniform.
The result:
✔ Faster fusion
✔ Higher melt strength
✔ Better surface finish
✔ More stable extrusion
For this reason, PA is typically added at the beginning of the mixing cycle to ensure uniform distribution throughout the blend.
🔹 Impact Modifier (IM): How Does It Work?
PVC is naturally rigid and relatively brittle.
Impact Modifiers such as CPE or Acrylic IM absorb and dissipate impact energy before cracks can propagate.
When impact occurs:
• Stress concentrates around modifier particles.
• Localized deformation absorbs energy.
• Crack growth is slowed or stopped.
The result:
✔ Higher impact resistance
✔ Improved toughness
✔ Better low-temperature performance
✔ Reduced brittle failure
Processing Aids help PVC fuse efficiently, while Impact Modifiers help PVC survive mechanical stress efficiently.
🔹 Why Does Addition Temperature Matter?
Many processors prefer adding Impact Modifiers after the blend reaches approximately 50–70°C (depending on formulation and supplier recommendations).
At this temperature:
• Dispersion improves.
• Agglomeration decreases.
• Distribution becomes more uniform.
Better dispersion means better impact performance.

Initial Stage:
• PVC Resin
• Stabilizer
• Processing Aid (PA)
• Lubricants
• Pigments
Intermediate Stage (≈ 50–70°C):
• Impact Modifier (IM)
Final Stage:
Continue mixing until reaching the target discharge temperature before cooling.
