Many manufacturers experience unexpected bond failures between dissimilar materials such as aluminum, steel, composites, and plastics.
The first reaction is usually to question the adhesive.
But the real culprit is often thermal expansion.
Every material expands and contracts at a different rate when exposed to temperature changes. When two materials bonded together move differently, stress begins building inside the adhesive layer.
Day after day.
Cycle after cycle.
Eventually, even a high-strength adhesive can crack, separate, or lose adhesion.
The solution isn't always selecting a stronger adhesive.
In many cases, the better choice is a more flexible adhesive capable of absorbing movement and dissipating stress.
The most durable bonds aren't necessarily the strongest.
They're the ones designed to move.
Before changing adhesives, ask:
How much differential thermal expansion exists between the materials you're bonding?
How is your team validating adhesive performance under real-world thermal cycling conditions?
