Many insect wings are assemblies of flexible membranes connected through compliant, interlocking joints. These interfaces allow large deformations, distribute stresses, and prevent catastrophic failure.
Perhaps, when engineering brittle materials, the challenge is not only making stronger materials, but designing smarter interfaces.
This is where computational design can open a new outlook: not copying nature, but translating biological principles into manufacturable architectures.
