Plasticizers are substances added to polymers to enhance flexibility, elongation, and processability.
They’re especially critical in resins like PVC, but also used in polyolefins and other thermoplastics when changes in the mechanical behavior is needed.
What They Actually Do?
Plasticizers work at the molecular level. They reduce the intermolecular forces between polymer chains, lowering the glass transition temperature (Tg) and viscosity of the molten plastic. This increases the mobility of macromolecules, making the material easier to shape and more flexible after cooling. They also help with processing by reducing pressure and torque, therefore also providing lower energy consumption.
