A Japanese consortium is developing an advanced plastics recycling hub designed to supply high-quality #recycledmaterials for automotive manufacturing, addressing Europe's tightening regulations on recycled content while establishing infrastructure Japan currently lacks.
The project aims to develop a business model for efficiently converting sorted plastics into recycled feedstocks and ensuring stable supply of high-quality recycled plastics by establishing a consolidated hub enabling advanced sorting of post-consumer plastics and ensuring traceability through digital technology and AI. Recycled plastics are rarely used in Japanese automobile manufacturing despite increasing regulatory pressure in Europe requiring stable supply systems for high-quality recycled materials.
#MitsubishiChemical leads project management and chemical recycling feasibility studies. Mitsubishi Electric heads research on #advancedsortingmethods, #sortingflows, and traceability systems. #JapanPolypropylene focuses on mechanical recycling alongside group compounding company Rhombic, which will also study resin analysis methods.
Following completion of the feasibility study, the companies plan to build a system supplying high-quality recycled feedstocks based on diverse #postconsumerplastics for wide-ranging applications, with plans to transition to a pilot project or commercialization phase.
The initiative addresses a critical gap in Japan's recycling infrastructure while positioning participating companies to meet evolving global automotive industry requirements for recycled content and supply chain transparency.
