𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 — 𝗣𝗔𝟭𝟭 (𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗡𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗻)

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 | 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 | 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 | 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 | 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝐀𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐦𝐚

#𝗣𝗔𝟭𝟭 is a semi-crystalline, 100% bio-based 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗿 produced from 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗶𝗹. It is obtained through the polymerization of 11-aminoundecanoic acid, 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀.

These long aliphatic segments 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 in the polymer.


As a result, PA11 is 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗳 than shorter chain polyamides, allowing for 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀), 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Its unique chemical structure also contributes to 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, especially in humid or chemically aggressive environments. PA11 also stands out from other polyamides thanks to its 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 (<200 °C). Environmentally, PA11 delivers an 80% lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based polyamides — and ongoing efforts aim to reduce this even further.


PA11 is commonly used in 𝗽𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, where lightweight, chemical resistance, and durability are key. The picture below speaks to use of PA11 for hiking sticks.


A main drawback is it's lower glass-transition temperature (40-53°C) means that 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱/𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗔𝟭𝟭 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.


𝗣𝗔𝟭𝟭 𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 reinforced with unidirectional 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 can be procured under the UDX® brand from Arkema.
