Tomra Recycling Opens Advanced Test and Training Center in Charlotte, NC

Tomra Recycling has opened its state-of-the-art test and training center in Charlotte, NC, to boost customer support for recyclers across the Americas. Equipped with cutting-edge sorting technologies, the facility offers expanded testing capabilities, advanced training programs, and end-to-end material tracking solutions to optimize recycling operations.

Tomra Recycling, a producer of sensor-based sorting solutions, has inaugurated its new test and training center in Charlotte, NC. The facility, which opened this week, offers recyclers in the Americas access to cutting-edge sorting technologies, advanced training programs, and streamlined material testing capabilities.

“Today, we celebrate much more than expanded material testing capabilities and efficiency for customers and partners operating in the Americas,” said Michelle Landon, senior vice president and head of Americas for Tomra Recycling. “This investment in testing, training, and warehouse space at our Americas headquarters is a commitment to a deeper level of support. From pre-sale consultation and machinery sales and installation to after-sales support and ongoing technical training, Tomra Recycling partners with our customers throughout the equipment’s lifecycle.”

The new 4,500-square-foot test center is equipped with Tomra’s latest sorting technologies, including the Autosort system with GAINnext, a deep learning AI technology. Autosort combines flexible sensor configurations and advanced object recognition to tackle complex sorting challenges across municipal solid waste, paper, plastics, and packaging.

For plastic flake materials, the center features Autosort Flake and Innosort Flake technologies. These systems deliver simultaneous detection of polymers and colors, leveraging near-infrared (NIR) spectrometry, dual-sided imaging, and metal sensors to achieve high-purity sorting even from contaminated streams.

The Waste Analyzer from PolyPerception further enhances material tracking by capturing real-time images of material flow and analyzing key performance metrics, such as throughput, waste composition, and yield loss.

“Customers can now enjoy expanded testing capacities, shorter lead times, and greater flexibility when it comes to scheduling tests,” said Andre Lehmann, test center manager recycling North America for Tomra Recycling. “Recycling operations in the Americas are benefitting from collective global Tomra expertise with our new Test & Training Center, since our Research & Development teams are continuing to innovate with new optical sorting and deep learning AI applications to meet customer needs.

Training programs to maximize recycling efficiency:

The Charlotte facility also enhances Tomra’s training capabilities, offering both internal technician training and external customer programs. Two one-day external training sessions have been announced:

Operational Maintenance Training: Covers basic machine operation, safety protocols, performance data backup, system restoration, preventative maintenance, and fault code diagnostics.

Maximizing Performance Training: Focuses on advanced machine settings, performance stabilization, diagnostics, and optimization techniques.

“We can now expand and enhance our training capabilities at our Americas headquarters,” said Mateusz Brezinski, Tomra Recycling’s customer experience director. “We plan to conduct internal service technician training as well as offer external maintenance and performance training.

A global network of innovation

Tomra’s new testing and training center in Charlotte is one of seven facilities worldwide. Additionally, metal materials can be tested at Wendt Corp.'s test center in Buffalo, NY, which features X-tract GAINnext for metals, and Autosort Pulse intelligent sorting solutions.

“We are excited about the flexibility our new testing and training center gives us in supporting our customers,” said Daniel Ghiringhello, head of sales Americas for Tomra Recycling. “We invite all recyclers to bring their materials and sorting challenges to Tomra to develop a flexible, customized solution that maximizes throughput, yield, purity, and profitability.
