Did you know there are ceramic materials that are stronger than metals?
Or others that are as transparent as glass?
Technical ceramics (or high-performance ceramics) are engineered, inorganic, non-metallic materials characterised by extreme hardness, high-temperature resistance, wear resistance, and excellent electrical insulation. Often used as superior alternatives to metals and polymers, they are deployed in demanding industries such as automotive, electronics, and medical technology.
ceramitec, a professional and biannual trade fair, opened its doors last week in Munich. This was an opportunity to observe who produces and processes these high-performance materials, and where they are applied. The exhibition featured dozens of 3D printing machine and service providers, alongside traditional casting and sintering processes.
๐ฅ MED-TECH
As a biocompatible material, ceramics are used for implants as well as exoskeletal components. Lithoz presented the world’s first patient-specific ceramic ear molds for hearing aids in serial production. These are user-specific, acoustically neutral, and easy to clean.
Alongside this, a cranial implant was shown as a bone replacement. The ability to precisely tune porosity and customise the fit makes these solutions particularly compelling.
๐ง AUDIO
If you are an audiophile with a high-quality turntable, cartridge selection is critical. Cartridges come in two types: moving magnet and moving coil. A moving coil (MC) cartridge has a fixed magnet and a mobile coil. The coil moves within the magnetic field, generating an electromotive force. These cartridges tend to be more expensive and sensitive.
Steinbach AG manufactured a single-piece ceramic housing for the MC system of the Thales Voro. Its web-shaped zirconia (ZrO₂) housing is engineered to remain completely contact-free above the needle.
๐ญ HEAVY INDUSTRY
In industrial, automotive, and aerospace applications, non-oxide ceramics are prevalent. Based on compounds such as silicon carbide (SiC), silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), and aluminum nitride (AlN), these materials offer high thermal conductivity and extreme hardness.
Sterton Ceramics, together with KGM and MG Ceramics, has established a manufacturing line in Germany that is fully independent of geopolitical supply chains. Their bearings exhibit strong mechanical properties and are currently produced in sizes ranging from 2 mm to 20 mm.
๐ก️ DEFENSE
Silicon carbide (SiC), with its distinct dark grey color, is widely used in protective armour systems. Nurol Teknoloji presented a range of armour solutions and components designed for defense applications.
