Utopia Plastix produces resin from cover crops, offering a plant-based alternative to petroleum-based plastics that is compatible with traditional equipment like injection molding and extrusion. The process uses the molecules already present in plants without chemical changes, addressing challenges such as drying and the material's fibrous nature.
Available in pellet or powder form, the resin matches applications by melt index and polymer type, though processed at lower temperatures. It has been used in rigid containers, flexible packaging, and utensils, with potential advantages in barrier performance and degradation.
In agricultural film tests, it held back pests, retained moisture, and degraded after 120-140 days, adding nutrients to soil upon breakdown.
