3 PVC myths your customers still believe
And how to address them calmly.
PVC is one of the most discussed materials in the plastics industry. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.
Myth 1: “PVC is toxic.”
PVC as a polymer is stable and widely used in applications ranging from medical devices to drinking water pipes. Like any material, performance and safety depend on formulation, regulatory compliance, and correct application. Modern stabilizer systems and additive regulations have evolved significantly over the past decades.
Myth 2: “PVC can’t be recycled.”
PVC is mechanically recyclable and already recycled in large volumes in construction applications such as window profiles and pipes. Collection systems and sorting remain challenges in some regions, but technically, PVC recycling is established and growing.
Myth 3: “PVC is worse than alternatives.”
Material comparison is application-specific. PVC often performs well in durability, fire behavior, and cost-efficiency over long service life. In many building applications, long lifespan and low maintenance significantly influence overall environmental impact.
The real discussion should not be “good vs bad.”
It should be “fit for purpose, responsibly formulated, and responsibly managed.”
What’s the most common PVC myth you still hear? Let's discuss.
