It’s a structural contradiction in how we design textiles. • Reactive dyes form covalent ether bonds with cotton. • Disperse dyes embed in the amorphous zones of polyester. • Vat dyes are insoluble and locked deep within cellulosic fibers. • Pigments are bonded to the fiber surface using resins and binders. All of these systems are selected for permanence — built to resist fading from water, UV, abrasion, and chemicals. But when it comes to recycling, those same strengths become limitations.
